Vashon Island, situated west of Seattle and north of Tacoma, affords a unique opportunity for country living and small town atmosphere in the proximity of major economic and cultural centers. The varied topographical features of the islands (Vashon and Maury islands are connected by a land bridge) includes protected harbors, plateaus with expansive views of Mt Ranier, the Olympic and Cascade mountains, rugged forested terrain, farm lands, ranch lands, and quaint historic towns.
The Island is accesible by Washington State Ferries on the north and south ends. There is a municipal air strip for small planes and protected moorage in Quartermaster Harbor. The protection of the surrounding Puget Sound provides an enviroment which is slower-paced and peaceful. These features have attracted and support a vital art community. K2 Ski Corporation, Pacific Research, and a variety of tech companies provide an economic base. The self-contained community supports a K-12 school system sports programs, restaurants and boutiques and two shopping centers.
Offloading from the ferry is an instant relief from the bustling city. There are no traffic lights or congestion. The scale is hometown with about one hundred kids per class year; a year round resident population of about 12,000.
